Wow, where has the time gone?
Hey kids - long time no chat. Lots of changes - lots of thinking - lots of living - lots of learning (hopefully). Here's my Christmas blog from last year - I'll be doing another for this year to catch you all up, but 2005 kind of sucked more than any other year. It's now Q4 of 2006, and I'm just now thinking that I'm coming out of the shock & awe of 2005.

Howdy y'all
By now, I'm sure there's not many of you who even check to see if I've blogged lately.
Sorry, but I've been preoccupied, and haven't felt like talking about it.
Without going into too many specifics, because I'm just not ready for that, it's been a hard year in some ways.
Some of you know that most things remind me of song lyrics, in a life imitating art imitating life circle of thought.
Well, today I started singing "I know where I've been" from Hairspray (lyrics by Scott Wittman & Marc Shaiman), and I thought I'd share the lyrics (with a line omitted that doesn't apply to me...) with you all as a short reflection on where my head is. It's a good struggle song - for a movement, for a personal struggle, for any group going through a difficult time. Right now it speaks to me in a very specific way.
Cheers,
Rob
"I Know Where I've Been"
There's a light in the darkness. . .
There's a light burning bright
Showing me the way
But I know where I've been
There's a cry in the distance
It's a voice that comes from deep within
There's a cry, asking why
I pray the answer's up ahead
'Cause I know where I've been
There's a road we've been travellin'
Lost so many on the way
But the riches will be plenty
Worth the price we had to pay
There's a dream in the future
There's a struggle we have yet to win
And there's pride in my heart
'Cause I know where I'm going
And I know where I've been
There's a road we must travel
There's a promise we must make
'Cause the riches will be plenty
Worth the risk and chances that we take
There's a dream in the future
There's a struggle we have yet to win
Use that pride in our hearts
To lift us up to tomorrow
Cause just to sit still would be a sin
I know it! I know it! I know where I'm going
And Lord knows I know where I've been
Oh! When we win, I'll give thanks to my God
'Cause I know where I've been.

A Big New York Cheer
A very big Congratulations to Michael for his admission to grad school! The citizens of New York City shall welcome you with open arms, I'm sure.
A very big Congratulations to Gene for his wonderful finish in the LA Marathon. One day, my friend, I'll maybe join you!
And a quick update on me -
Still looking for a job -
Sprained my knee dancing in rehearsal 5 days before our Chorus concert (so no dancing for me), but the singing was good -
Taking some more affirmative steps in the job search process, but not much to report yet.
So, no whining, just positive thinking, just bright blue sky in front of me (even though it is once again snowing here in NYC).

Happy 2nd Blogaversary to Truvy
It's been 2 years, with the past 1/2 year questioning whether I want to continue Truvy or not...
I think there have been a lot of good things I've gotten out of this blog, and there are things that have bitten me in the ass...
But overall, I think I'll continue - just at my own pace.
I think until I find a job, I would be at risk of whining too much, which I do Not want to be the big message.
But, I appreciate that it's been boring for the past 6 to 9 months.
Thanks for those who continue to send me words of encouragement & e-mails - I do appreciate it.
So, happy 2 years to truvy...

clever word play
Thanks to my favorite Canadian friend for passing this along - I do love clever word play, don't ya know:
The Washington Post's Style Invitational once again asked readers to take
any word from the dictionary, alter it by adding, subtracting, or changing
one letter, and supply a new definition.
Here are the 2003 winners:
1. Intaxication: Euphoria at getting a tax refund, which lasts until you
realize it was your money to start with.
2. Reintarnation: Coming back to life as a hillbilly.
3. Bozone (n.): The substance surrounding stupid people that stops bright
ideas from penetrating. The bozone layer, unfortunately, shows little sign
of breaking down in the near future.
4. Foreploy: Any misrepresentation about yourself for the purpose of
getting laid.
5. Cashtration (n.): The act of buying a house, which renders the subject
financially impotent for an indefinite period.
6. Giraffiti: Vandalism spray-painted very, very high.
7. Sarchasm: The gulf between the author of sarcastic wit and the person
who doesn't get it.
8. Inoculatte: To take coffee intravenously when you are running late.
9. Hipatitis: Terminal coolness.
10. Osteopornosis: A degenerate disease. (This one got extra credit.)
11. Karmageddon: It's like, when everybody is sending off all these really
bad vibes, right? And then, like, the Earth explodes and it's, like, a
serious bummer.
12. Decaflon (n.): The grueling event of getting through the day
consuming only things that are good for you.
13. Glibido: All talk and no action.
14. Dopeler effect: The tendency of stupid ideas to seem smarter when they
come at you rapidly.
15. Beelzebug (n.): Satan in the form of a mosquito that gets into your
bedroom at three in the morning and cannot be cast out.
16. Caterpallor (n.): The color you turn after finding half a grub in the
fruit you're eating.
And the pick of the literature:
17. Ignoranus: A person who's both stupid and an asshole.

Gracias
Things I'm thankful for - in no particular order:
Robert, a loving and mostly understanding & patient partner
Our dog, Rowan
- I've had dogs my whole life, and he is by far the best dog EVAH! (I know everyone says that...)
A loving family - a great sister and mother who love & support me, almost no matter what
An amazing (small) group of friends - I might not have that many close friends, and I know that friendships and your closeness to others goes in waves & cycles, but I count 6 people right now that I am so thankful for - if you read this, I think you know that you're one of those people. Each of you are so very dear to me - thank you.
My health - despite some imperfections, I remain healthy, and I am quite grateful for that.
My knowledge & capability - While not currently being able to show it in a constructive manner, I am thankful for all that I've learned, and the abilities with which I've been blessed.
A relatively free society in which I live - again, this is by comparison, and while not perfect, I'm not sure there's anywhere else that would afford a big poofter like me as many opportunities.
The rich cultural environment in which I live - New York City - there's just NO place like it. I might covet aspects of other cities, but after over 11 years, I think of NYC as home, and really, I LOVE NY. I mean, yesterday I saw The Boy from Oz (and Hugh Jackman spoke directly to me TWICE = tee hee! I felt just like a blushing school girl), and the night before I saw Henry IV at Lincoln Center, with amazing and strong performances from the entire company. And, yesterday evening we saw Die Mommie Die! with Charles Busch - fantasticly funny and campy - I just loved loved loved it and will probably see it again, and will definitely buy the DVD when it comes out.
Anyway - despite my life needing some improvement, I am thankful for so much - much more than the few things I've written about here.
I wish you all many things for which you can be grateful.
Peace,
Rob

economic bliss??
Okay, just a brief note on today's reports of economic wunderland -
a) economic factors (some) are growing at the fastest rate since the Depression.
Um, well, DUH! It's getting a little better, but Hello? We're starting from a really really shitty place -
Just because you fell from 100 to 30, and are now back up to 40 does NOT mean you're doin' swell.
No, it just doesn't.
b) I fucking hate hate hate that Bush and his numbers cooking economic cronies are going to latch onto this for the election next year and say - "Hey, we're doing a great job!"
Go cook some more numbers and bankrupt the country, I'm so through listening to your spun bullshit.
Cancel my subscription, I'm through with your issues.

Wedding Bliss
Well, with the good news coming out of Massachusetts (pardon the pun), I thought I'd post a few pictures from the lovely wedding RJ and I went to on Saturday night here in NYC. One of Robert's lawschool classmates, Francine, was getting married to a lovely gentleman named Laurent. The wedding was very nice and the reception loads of fun. We had a great time hanging out w/ RJ's classmates, and I enjoyed getting to know them better.

Inspired
Wow -
I'm happy right now, even though I am up WAY too late.
I was nodding off to sleep when I was suddenly inspired. In this particular instance, it was for our Chorus "No-Talent Show", coming up in less than a month when we go away for a weekend to rehearse, elect the new Queen & Butch (so happy to be a year removed from all that), and put on a show on Saturday night.
Without giving away any details here (until after the show), I thought about what was in my closet, thought about the look I wanted to copy & achieve on my own, and put it mostly together from what I had. Plus, I was inspired for the other 2 people in the number... Gene & Curty. So, here I am e-mailing them photos of what I'm thinking.
But the fun thing is - I haven't felt inspired in a long long time.
Maybe it was the good rehearsal tonight, when our conductor pulled me aside and asked if I was auditioning for a solo, because he thought it would be a good thing (not that he's giving me the part - but we'll see how I do).
Maybe it was that I had 2 good interviews last week, and I'm hoping something good happens soon on the job front.
Maybe it was the fantastic sex I just had with my boyfriend, and it let loose some creative, inspirational flow of energy and creativity.
Whatever it was, I'm glad it happened, but now, can I please go to sleep?
Later dear readers.
Drop me a note & let me know what you're up to - robc212@aol
